Creating my paintings is such a personal and analogue process that I rarely remember to share them online. This painting, made up of two canvases (25×35 cm), was completed in November 2014 as a birthday gift for a dear friend.
He was turning fifty, and I liked the idea of a cat climbing a step, ascending. I also liked the idea of two separate, offset canvases, representing that ascent. One represents the past and, in a way, a separation between the more instinctive, physical part of ourselves (what in the chakra tradition corresponds to the base, the first energy centre) and the higher part, the mind. Rather than focusing on decline, I preferred to focus on the constant growth that comes with adulthood.
