This biomech sleeve is one of the most unusual I have ever created. The client contacted me for a steampunk-style sleeve. During our meeting, he specified that he wanted a biomechanical-steampunk design. The request caught me off guard, so I delved deeper. I discovered that he didn’t have very clear ideas, but he wanted to include a cat, a plague doctor mask, and many gears in the design. I immediately discarded the idea of filling the arm with gears, as it would have made the piece monotonous and extremely slow to execute with precision.

Creative Proposals

I avoided overly simplistic solutions, such as 19th-century robotic structures, proposing a mechanism that recalled the steam engines of the 19th century, inspired by the photos I had taken at automobile museums, focusing on the oldest engines.

He liked the design right away, from the very first sketches, so I didn’t need to make any changes. In fact, he was enthusiastic about every new proposal, even when I suggested adding textures that conveyed a sense of wear to make the tattoo more realistic and fascinating. These details would require more time to complete, but he wasn’t concerned about that.

Dynamism and Originality

The stroke of genius, in my opinion, was the representation of the cat. Initially, I had imagined it facing forward and static, but then I decided to have it leaning out of the cockpit, as if it were operating the machinery below, adding dynamism to the design.

The work was challenging, but the final result is among the most original I have created.

Protecting the Tattoo

Unfortunately, when it came time to take pictures of the healed tattoo, the client had a tanned arm. A tattoo must always be protected, preferably with a sleeve, especially during the summer months! Fortunately, he returned in the autumn, when the tan had faded, and I was finally able to take pictures and shoot a video without the colour alteration caused by the tan.

In conclusion, this sleeve represents a perfect example of how different styles can blend to create something unique and extraordinary. It is one of my favourite projects, not only for its originality but also for the creative challenge it represented.

Below, you can see the stages of the process and videos of the creation of the design and the fully healed tattoo.
