A client asked for a dragon, and while I was sketching various solutions I thought it would be interesting to experiment with a cub. The idea was predictably destined to be discarded: those who request a dragon typically want to convey a message of grandeur, strength, invincibility. All themes that don’t really go with a cub.
But I really liked the sketch, I fell in love with it to the point of turning it into a personal illustration, which often happens when inspiration strikes and I have enough time on my hands. So I developed the idea, imagining the little dragon catching its first prey: a piranha. I find the idea of two predators facing off both ironic and interesting. Adding cooling towers from a nuclear power plant as a background gives it a sci-fi touch, as if the dragon were the result of some genetic mutation.
The result would be perfect for a book cover.
